1) How did you decide the dances, or pick out the songs? Was it difficult to decide on those dances/songs?
This year was the first year that the Andes culture was represented during the Multicultural Gala so it was challenging to try to figure out dances since no one has ever done it before but as an Ecuadorian I tried to use my culture knowledge to try to figure it out. The Andes culture is based on different countries in the Andes mountains, so I had to focus on songs that were most popular in the regions such as Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia. Choosing the songs was a similarly thoughtful process. I selected music that not only complemented the chosen dances but also reflected the soul-stirring melodies and rhythms that are characteristic of Andean music.
2) Teamwork and commitment is a big part of Gala. How were you able to teach the dance to your fellow members (did you practice outside of school? did you record video clips to record, Etc.) ? Were there any troubles you had with your members (attendance issues, ticket issues)?
A: Teamwork and commitment were indeed crucial elements in preparing for the day of the Gala. To teach the dances to my members, we employed a variety of strategies to ensure everyone was prepared. We had to hold practice sessions outside of school when it was needed since during school wasn’t enough. Dedicating time each week to rehearse and refine our performances was necessary but sometimes challenging with the schoolwork we all have. Additionally, we utilized video clips and recordings to assist with learning the choreography. At first we had attendance issues and lack of motivation but I’m proud of my members for working through it and making the outcome possible.
3) What part of Gala did you enjoy most?
A: The part of the Gala that I enjoyed the most was seeing everything come together on the night of the event. I was proud of witnessing the culmination of our hard work, from the intricate dance routines to the vibrant music, and seeing the audience's enthusiastic response was incredibly rewarding. It was a moment of being proud and fulfilled, knowing that our collective efforts had resulted in a memorable and culturally rich experience for everyone involved.
4) If you could, would you join Gala again? If so, which ones would you be interested in?
A: Absolutely, I would love to participate in the Gala again if given the opportunity. There are so many aspects of the event that I found fulfilling and enjoyable, from the practices to the chance to showcase cultural heritage through dance and music. In terms of specific roles or areas of interest, I would be open to participating in any aspect of the Gala that aligns with my interests, whether it's performing in dances, helping with choreography, assisting in event planning and organization, or even exploring new cultural themes and traditions to highlight in future galas. Each Gala presents a unique opportunity for creativity, collaboration, and celebration, and I would eagerly embrace the chance to be part of such a dynamic and enriching experience again. Even if it’s doing the Andes Gala again for a second year and improving from what we started.
5) Do you recommend Gala for new incoming freshmen?
A: Absolutely! Participating in the Multicultural Gala can be a fantastic experience for new freshmen. It offers numerous benefits such as opportunities to make new friends, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and showcase talents in a supportive and inclusive environment. Additionally, being involved in a Gala allows freshmen to immerse themselves in the cultural fabric of their school or community, fostering a sense of belonging and pride. Whether it's through dancing, organizing, or supporting the event in other ways, participating in a Gala can be a memorable and rewarding experience for freshmen, helping them to form connections, build confidence, and create lasting memories.
